League History
The South Coast Baseball League (SCBL) began in the summer of 2002 as the Fairhaven Regional Baseball Association (FRBA). The SCBL is a men's +18 wood bat league that plays two games a week. In 2002, the league played their games at the Hastings Middle School in Fairhaven, MA. This league began as an over 18, men’s wood bat baseball league. There were four original teams, The A’s, Cardinals, Marlins and the White Sox. The players were comprised of some of the best local talent in the area.
In 2003, the league changed its name to the South Coast Baseball League (SCBL) and began playing with a 6 team league. The league took a major facelift with the A’s splitting up into two teams, the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks. The Cardinals became the Red Sox. There was also the addition of the European Thinkers.
In 2004, the SCBL began the year with a highly competitive 4 team league, making every game even more exciting. The Red Sox (formerly Cardinals team), the Dodgers and the European Thinkers did not return for the third season. The remaining players formed a new Dodgers team. The Marlins also changed to the Wareham Bulls, who are a minor league team best known for the movie Bull Durham. In a major move, the league begins playing games at the Dartmouth Middle School and at Old Colony Regional Technical High School.
In 2005, the Arizona Diamondbacks changed to the Red Sox. The Bulls and the Dodgers combined forces to become a revamped Wareham Bulls team. Also a new Indians team formed from former players of the Sunday Buttonwood Park league. The league also began playing games at the Dartmouth High School located on Bakersville Road in South Dartmouth, and in Rochester on Dexter Lane. The playoffs were played at Walsh Field at New Bedford High School.
In 2006, the Indians became a new revamped Mets squad, while the league welcomed two new teams, the Tigers and Nationals. The league was home to four fields, Dartmouth High School, Dartmouth Middle School, Dexter Lane and Gaudet Junior High School.
2007 was a year of change for the league when Dartmouth, Middletown and New Bedford were no longer used as playing fields for the league. The league began using the varsity/legion field at Apponequet High School, a return to Old Colony High School's Varsity Field and the playoffs were now played at Pope Park in Acushnet. Dexter Lane was the only returning field from the previous season. The league also began using a three game per week schedule which began right after Memorial Day. The Angels, made up of some former Bulls members and 2002 Cardinals players took the place of the defunct Tigers squad.
In 2008, the Nationals merged with the Red Sox, the Bulls became the Dodgers for a second time. The Marlins returned after departing the league in 2004. The league enjoyed its seventh season while the Mets became the 5th different team to win the league championship.
In 2009 the Royals joined the league to fill the void left by the Dodgers and Marlins. The Red Sox won their second championship tieing the Marlins and White Sox for most league championships.
In 2010 the Braves joined the league to replace the vacated Mets. All games during the season were played at either Dexter Lane or Apponequet High School. The Red Sox defeated the White Sox to claim their third championship.
