Do I need a permit to attend drivers ed class?
No. A drivers permit is only required to take driving lessons. However, we strongly recommend our students to get their driving permit as soon as they turn 16. This is because the law requires students to hold their permits for a minimum of six months before they can get their license.
I am 16 years old, how many hours does the RMV require for behind-the-wheel training?
If you are at least 16 and under 18 years old and obtained your driving permit on or after to September 1, 2007, then you will require 12 hours behind-the-wheel driver education training (up from 6 hours) and required 40 hours of parent-supervised driving (up from 12 hours).
However, If you are 16 and under 18 years old and obtained your driving permit prior to September 1, 2007, then you will requrie 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driver education training and 12 hours of parent-supervised driving. More details on this new junior operator law can be found at the Massachusetts RMV web page.
